A total of 259 bird species have been recorded in the City of Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County). This list is a compilation of bird observations and records from local birders, Christmas Bird Counts, bird surveys, Kawartha Conservation records, Field Checklist of the Birds of Carden Township (Bowles, 1997), Atlas of Breeding Birds of Ontario (Cadman, 1987 and 2001-2005 database) and the annual Victoria County Bird Reports (1996-98).

One-hundred and eighty four species (184) have been confirmed breeding in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Breeding confirmation is by nest records taken from the Royal Ontario Museums Ontario Nest Record Scheme data, the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas and local birders.

Classification and nomenclature follow recent changes in the American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU) Checklist of North American Birds (7th edition, 1998).
